At a Glance
A smokeless cigarette looks a lot like a regular cigarette, at first glance. They are similar in size to traditional cigarettes and users exhale cloud-like plumes. It even contains nicotine but that’s where the similarities end. This nifty device is completely tobacco-free. Lisa Lehman, manager of Tropical Illusions Tanning Salon, said that this device provides people who smoke with another option.
How it Works
The electronic cigarette has a rechargeable battery, atomizer and a cartridge with a nicotine solution. When inhaled, the device releases a vapor containing nicotine. The technology can used in this new age smoking alternative is much like the technology found in fog machines. The vapors produced are completely harmless.
Quit on the First Day
Jerry Brickley, owner of Tropical Illusions Tanning Salon attested to the benefits of using one. He said it was the easiest switch he’s ever made and it allowed him to quit smoking tobacco on the first day alone. He also indicated that that nicotine patches weren’t successful for him and the hardest part was finding something new for his hands to do. The e cigarette successfully eliminated his desire for tobacco while satisfying his nicotine habit.
The FDA’s Stand on Electronic Cigarettes
The FDA, Food and Drug Administration, hasn’t approved of the electronic cigarettes. This is because the product hasn’t been tested for how much nicotine is delivers to the body during consumption. Cancer causing chemicals are said to be found in burning tobacco and not nicotine. The device may be tobacco-less, but one FDA study found some trace amounts of toxic chemicals found in tobacco that’s also found in some electronic cartridges. Yes it’s true, all brands are not created equal. So, here’s our recommendation. Also An oncologist states that if these compounds are at low levels, then they wouldn’t pose a threat and it’s still better than smoking real cigarettes.
Bypassing the Smoking Ban
Smoking electronic cigarettes do not violate the smoking ban. It’s not entirely different than seeing someone with a nicotine patch. Since the smoking ban regulates the burning of tobacco, electric cigarettes are exempt. You can now get your nicotine fix in restaurants, clubs, bars, and other previously banned locations.
The Statistics
The Electronic Cigarette Association said that around 1 million Americans use the innovative smoking alternative. They were only introduced in the US 2 years ago but were developed in China 5 years prior. Since its introduction, the market has grown exponentially and sales are expected to go from $10 million in 2008 to $100 million this year. Will you join the revolution?
